The Honorable George S. Smith serves as Supervisor of District Five with the Hinds County Board of Supervisors. He has been a member of the Board since 1980 and was one of two African-Americans elected to this post since Reconstruction. He became President of the Mississippi Association of Supervisors in June 1999.
Prior to being elected Supervisor, he served as senior staff member to the Governor as Economic Development Advisor and was appointed to the State Building Commission, State Medicaid Commission and was also the first African American to hold these positions.
He serves on the Mississippi Rural Development Council, Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame Foundation, Central Mississippi Planning and Development District, Urban Community Services, Mississippi Consortium for International Development, Mississippi Ballet International USA, Inc., John Bell Williams Airport Authority, Hinds Community College Development Foundation, Governor's Commission on Electronic Government and the Downtown Convention Advisory Committee.
He is a member of the Minority Economic Development (MED) Week Steering Committee, 100 Black Men of Jackson, and Jackson State University-National Youth Sport Program. He is active in NACo, serving as the Vice Chairman of the NACo Agriculture and Rural Affairs Steering Committee; Hinds County Health Alliance, Jackson State University Parkway Commission, and a member of the Mississippi State Committee on Taxation.
Supervisor Smith has also served on the Development of the Delta Regional Authority that was signed by President Bill Clinton December 2000.
The Hinds County, Mississippi native attended Sumner Hill High School, Utica Junior College and Jackson State University. He is also a member of Collis Hill Church of Christ Holiness, USA, Terry, Mississippi.
Supervisor Smith has been a local businessman since 1965. He is the current owner and operator of Smith Enterprises (Smith Superette).
His many social, civic, business and community affiliations include: NAACP, American Red Cross, Hinds County Private Industry Council, Jackson Metro Housing Partnership, Metro-Jackson Chamber of Commerce, Project HOOP--West Jackson Housing Partnership, West Jackson Community Development Corporation, National Urban League, National Business League, Goodwill Industries and Metro YMCA.
Supervisor Smith serves on the boards of many local organizations, and has received many local and national honors and awards through those affiliations. |
