Norman A. Mitchell, Sr., a Democrat, is serving his third term on the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners and was recently re-elected to his fourth term, effective December 6, 2004. Mitchell represents District 2.

Mitchell is retired from the U.S. Postal Service, and is an U.S. Army veteran who served in Vietnam where he was wounded in combat and received the Purple Heart.

He was born in Charlotte at Good Samaritan Hospital, which was located at the site where Ericsson Stadium now stands. Mitchell graduated from York Road High School and attended Johnson C. Smith University. He is a graduate of the North Carolina Institute of Political Leadership.

Mitchell has previously served as chairperson of the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners’ Human Resources Steering Committee. He serves on a number of boards including Mecklenburg Ministries, the Carolinas Citizens Freedom Foundation, the National Association of County Commissioners’ Homeland Security Task Force, and the National Association of County Commissioners’ Human Services and Education Steering Committee.

He attends Memorial Presbyterian Church. Mitchell and his wife Delmarcia have two children, Alexis and Norman II.
